Nadya's Nights: Frost (The Holiday Special)
by steelcorpfilms ([info]steelcorpfilms)
at January 6th, 2010 (09:49 pm)

Like the great Doctor Who before me, I decided to do a Nadya's Nights holiday special. Originally, I intended for it to go from December 26th to December 31st with a chapter posted each day and climaxing on New Year's Eve cuz, hey... that'd be pretty rad. Instead, I'm just finishing it tonight. It's gotta few more parts to it than I intended, but that's not a bad thing cuz I think, in the grand scheme of things, it came out pretty awesome.

Anyway, check it out and lemme know what you think.

Nadya's Nights: Frost starts right here:

Hi guys, I've been writing a collection of short-stories based around mental illness in children, and I'd really appreciate some feedback on the formats, and how I've tried to belnd the comedy into the tragedy. So here's a little piece for your amusement.

Title: How to Save a Life
Summary: Arabella has seen enough Jeremy Kyle to know about the issues surrounding suicide and depression. So what will she do when she gets a call from a 17-year-old standing on a bridge, ready to jump?
Rating: T

How to Save a Life

Alex, I think I’m going to kill myself.

 OMG :(

Please help me, am at bridge

 Im in cinema ttyl

 But I’ll be dead

 :(

Agatha, please help me, am at bridge, love you so much, am suicidal, want to hear from you PLEASE

Darling, you have so much to live for! x

 Really? x

Yes. Am in cinema, speak later x

Arabella had worked as a consultant on the suicide hotline since the Woolworths in Bath had closed. As she said at the interview, she had no personal experience of suicide, but she watched a lot of shows that dealt with the issues surrounding it, such as Jeremy Kyle, and felt that she had a lot of accumulated wisdom to offer the community.

“Hello, you’ve reached the NHS suicide hotline thank you for waiting, your call is important to us and may be monitored for training purposes.”

     “Hello?”

Arabella paused with her diet coke half-way to her lips. “Hello,” she repeated.

     “H-h-h-hello?”

The short story competition I wrote this for called for 750 words or less. You can write a story in that length (you can write one in a single sentence with enough skill), but whether I managed to do it well ...

His days seemed mostly made up of smoking, drinking black coffee, and cutting obituaries out of the local paper, which he then taped to the walls. )

melody loosly based on elvis costellos verison of brown to blue, if this helps... any thoughts?
Footsteps over carpet seem to echo in my home,
It’s been so many years since I last lived alone-
I seem to have forgotten how to get on with myself
Living here without you, love, is ruining my health.

And people were so sad to hear what was happening to you
They came here in their numbers looking solemn and so blue
A simple diagnosis made a widow from a wife
When the doctors sentenced you to death
And sentenced me to life.

Well I’m not the kind of woman to be dependent on a man-
So I should cope without you, but I don’t think that I can.
They say that you would want me to find somebody new
But there’s no man alive I’d love as much as I love you.

And people were so sad to hear what was happening to you
They turned up on our doorstep just to ask if it was true
I thought that there was more to me then to simply be your wife
Till the doctors sentenced you to death
And sentenced me to life.

Now you’ve been gone a while, these wounds should start to heal-
Yeah I’ve got a lot of people here to tell me how to feel.
But I miss you in the morning, from our half empty bed
When the sun comes through the window to remind me that you’re dead.

And people were so sad to hear what was happening to you
They came to me in kindness, ‘is there anything I can do?’
Now there’s no more husband, what happens to the wife?
When the doctors sentenced you to death
They sentenced me to life.

books read in 2009 )

Best reads of 2009: Q&A, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire

short book list and recs

It's a sorry and shabby list this year. I was busy.

Interpreter of Maladies - Jhumpa Lahiri - A
Lucia Speaks the Message of Fatima - ?? - C
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert Pirsig - C-
Rome Sweet Home - Scott Hahn - C
The Stranger - Albert Camus - B
Crash - JG Ballard - B-
Sa Femme - Emanuele Bernheim - A
N.P. - Banana Yoshimoto - C+
A Million Little Pieces - James Frey - B
The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox - Maggie O'Farrell - C+
Smoke - Ivan Turgenev - B

I only read 11 books this year. I totally suck.

Best Read 2009: Sa Femme. Read it. For real. The author writes short, sweet, to the point, simply, and brilliantly.

Worst Read 2009: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. This guy is a pretentious windbag.

Saving A Riddle
by lynx ([info]lynxof93angels)
at December 31st, 2009 (12:54 pm)

This is actually my first time posting in a community. I just wanted to get some feedback on this story I wrote. It's not the first story I wrote, but it's the first that has been posted in a community. Maybe a comment or two?

This was written for our school paper. The editor assigned me to write a story about love. Since the whole school, including the children, are going to receive this paper, I planned to make it child friendly. It was supposed to be about a bratty student who turned out to have leukemia, but since it sounded a little too sad for a child, I changed it to something inspired by children's riddles - Humpty Dumpty. This story narrated in a child's point of view shows her determination to save Humpty Dumpty after feeling sad for his miserable end, that "he couldn't be put together again..."

Hey guys. Wrote another short story, it's the third one or so that I've posted here. You guys have been tremendously helpful in the past and even if this isn't good it's certainly a step up from my earlier stuff IMO.

I will award any readers/critics with free hugs and internets as well as my thoughts on anything you've written.

Details:
-5,000 words
-Some harsh language
-Fairly darkish tone

If you don't like reading in the LJ format feel free to read it in PDF form here: http://disc.420chan.org/lit/src/Julian%20and%20the%20Worm.pdf

A quick write, non-beta or whatever, just going with an sudden idea in my head.

Might include material that might offend some people. I use a mixture of British and American english, so my grammar and spelling might not be work out for some people.

About the lives of three people in an apartment. I know this is done before but I've never read anything about this so here it goes. Sorry for spelling errors and etc.

Third time's the charm??

Here is another peice up for feed back. It is a peice on lycanthropy but I swear on my children's lives I had the synopsis for this one worked out a year before I even heard of 'Twilight'. What I have here is just the prologue. Essentially the main character has no idea what she is and went through quite a lot as a child because her parents didn't have much of a clue either.
